The Difference Between Shopify 1.0 and 2.0

by Haydawn Studio

In June 2021, Shopify introduced Online Store 2.0, a significant update that brought about substantial changes for business owners. The following are key differences between Shopify 1.0 and 2.0:

Shopify 1.0

Speed and Performance
Limited in speed and efficiency compared to Shopify 2.0, which can handle more traffic and transactions without slowing down.

Customisation
Limited customisation options compared to Shopify 2.0, which allows users to create custom templates and designs. This enables unique and personalised online stores.

Marketing Tools
Basic marketing tools compared to Shopify 2.0, which offers more advanced marketing tools, such as email campaigns, social media integrations, and more, making it easier for business owners to promote their products and reach a wider audience.

Mobile Optimisation
Limited mobile optimisation compared to Shopify 2.0, which is designed with mobile optimisation in mind, making it easier for customers to browse and purchase products from their smartphones or tablets.

App Integrations
Limited app integrations compared to Shopify 2.0, which has a more extensive selection of app integrations, allowing for the addition of new features and functionality.

How to Identify Your Version

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Find the theme that you want to edit, and then click Customise.
  3. Select Products > Default product. This opens the default product template.
  4. Look in the sidebar, below the product template sections. If you have an Online Store 2.0 theme, then an Add section button appears below the section list.
  5. If no Add section button appears, then you might have a vintage sectioned theme or a vintage non-sectioned theme.

Upgrading to Shopify 2.0
If you're considering upgrading, it's crucial to back up your store and determine the best path for your store, whether it's downloading a new 2.0 theme from the Shopify Theme Store, updating your current theme to the 2.0 version, or migrating your current theme manually.

Misconceptions
It's important to note that the version of your theme does not necessarily indicate the version of Shopify's theme architecture you are using. Therefore, it's recommended to reach out to your designer/developer to understand your theme version.

Cost of Shopify 2.0
If you have a compatible theme, upgrading to Shopify 2.0 is free. However, additional costs may be incurred for redesigning this theme for uniqueness if required.

Understanding these differences is essential for business owners looking to optimise their online stores and provide a better experience for their customers. Shopify 2.0 offers significant advantages, including enhanced speed, performance, customisation, and marketing tools that merchants should consider when planning their store's future.
